Gantry cranes

Single leg, double leg, and mobile types of gantry cranes
Similar to a bridge crane except that it is floor supported at one or both ends instead of overhead (wall) supported
Used to span a smaller portion of the work area as compared to a bridge crane
The supports can be fixed in position or they can travel on runways
Can be used outdoors when "floor" supported at both ends

A gantry crane has a hoist in a trolley which runs horizontally along gantry rails, usually fitted underneath a beam spanning between uprights which themselves have wheels so that the whole crane can move at right angles to the direction of the gantry rails. These cranes come in all sizes, and some can move very heavy loads, particularly the extremely large examples used in shipyards or industrial installations . A special version is the container crane (or "Portainer" crane, named after the first manufacturer), designed for loading and unloading ship-borne containers at a port.

Gantry cranes are designed for lifting and positioning materials. The various types of gantry cranes , including the aluminum gantry crane, the steel gantry crane and the portable gantry crane, are essential for the efficient operation of many industrial facilities. These cranes are similar to overhead cranes except that they have a bridge for carrying the unit's trolley and are usually supported by two or more rigid legs. Additional related equipment that many industrial companies find indispensable include the lifting jib, the hoist trolley, the festoon system, the chain hoist and the portable lift.

The overhead travelling cranes are normally used in the following circumstances:

• Erection and maintenance operations of the main equipment of pumping stations, hydro-electric power plants, dams and irrigation systems
• Manoeuvring operations of stoplogs and fixed wheel gates
  Erection and maintenance operations of radial gates.
